Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

What do strains mean in probiotics?

Probiotic strains are genetic subtypes of species. Each probiotic strain has a different effect on the body. There are over 500 known probiotic strains. Two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, for instance, have over 100 different alleles, each with other functions and benefits. For example, Lactobacillus acidophilus UBLA-34 provides many health benefits specific to the intestinal tract lining, while strain B-64 has been shown to help with bloating and gas. Thus, probiotic strains are an essential part of understanding the quality of probiotics.

How many strains of probiotics are there?

Probiotic strains fall into seven main groups. These groups consist of Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, Saccharomyces, Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus, Escherichia and Bacillus. Probiotic strains within each probiotic family have different functions and benefits. However, there are more than six thousand types of probiotic bacteria strains.

It can be hard to know what to look for in each brand, especially when they all claim to be the best or look like candy. You may think it is just about brands, money and marketing, but there is a lot of information you need to know before buying your next probiotic.

Which probiotic strains do I need?

Why are Probiotic Strains Beneficial?

When you have harmful bacteria inside you, you can get sick often and worse as such conditions can cause a great deal of pain and inflammation. Probiotic strains are good bacteria that help your body fight off infections and diseases that can cause a great deal of pain and inflammation. These probiotic strains fight off the harmful bacteria naturally in your system.

The question of which strains to choose (or whether to choose a strain at all) comes up all the time. If you are doing a gut-healing protocol, should you take Lactobacillus strains like acidophilus and Bifidus? On the other hand, if you are suffering from an upper respiratory infection (such as sinusitis), should you consider Streptococcus thermophilus or Bacillus clausii. These few strains have been shown to reduce upper respiratory infections? Yes, probiotics can help you cure your condition. However, we recommend talking to your healthcare professional before randomly buying probiotic supplements.
